What software do writers use for writing articles/reviews/reports/manuscripts?

Is there any special software that writers use, or do they go with Microsoft Word, like everyone else?

1. Most use Word, though there are other similar options. My father worked at a business paper and all the reporters/writers there used Word except for one guy who used Appleworks.
2. Most popular software is MS Word.
