is there any free software which converts speech to text?

the purpose is to use it for writing articles by people who are not very fast with typing

1. No there isn't speech regonition is very expansive software but comes free with windows vista
2. Beware of free software...Most carry a lot of spy ware.
3. I had one program called "HAL" not HAL that computers got a while back but a dictation software. Go to download.com and search under that, i haven't in a while. If nothing seems to come up that you like, try finding someone who can perform dictation.

If you have a Windows XP or Win2000 computer, you can download their (Microsoft) speech engine FREE (at no cost) and install it to begin dictating and controlling Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc, etc. Additional capabilities can be added using the e-Speaking (website below) Voice and Speech Recognition software. The combination of Microsoft's software and e-Speaking should enable you to accomplish great things with voice recognition. In order to maximize the accuracy of the speech recognition software, the speech program will attempt to adjust the spellings of words based on the context of the sentence that it hears. In other words, speech programs analyze entire phrases or sentences, not just individual words. This is why you will often see nothing on the monitor/screen until just after you stop speaking. It takes a few seconds for the computer to figure out what you were saying. If you don't think about what you are going to say before you say it, you may end up just blabbering on about the topic but not really saying anything important.
